I bought this tree from a local garden centre in
spring 1996 because it had a natural informal upright style trunk.
Unfortunately because it is grafted the trunk is slightly 'waisted' near
the bottom.
I have disguised one side with a rock and have given the other side the
hammer treatment to try to swell the trunk. |

1997
The trunk is swelling slightly at the bottom but at
the same time the bark is splitting. I am not convinced this technique
is the best. |

I have removed the main leader to give the tree a
more mature looking crown and also the lower right hand branch to give a
more open look to the tree.
