I
have been into Bonsai for about five years now. The original
idea was that it will be my hobby for when I retire (it will take
that long to get the trees up to standard), but I did not know at
the time just how much it can take over your life (and soul)!
Bonsai: Not so much a hobby as a way of life.
I am a member at my local club (Eastleigh
Bonsai Society)
which meets once a month, and am a keen collector of Yamadori. I
am lucky in that I live on the edge of the New Forest in Hampshire
and have permission to dig Scots Pines there..

In
1998 I decided to have a go at the
European
Bonsai Association New Talent Competition.
The Southern area heat was held at Broadlands Estate
in Romsey
(my Home Town) as part of the
Hampshire Flower and Garden Show
which includes Bonsai
at Broadlands,
Eastleigh
Bonsai Society's
annual show and competition.
Big surprise, I won, so I got into the UK finals in
April 1999.

The
result, I failed, but was persuaded
to enter again my friends, so I took part in the Southern
Area Round and came second at Hove, which means I am
through to the UK final again in 2000

I have also won a
few trophies in the
club competition over the past few years, but I am of
the firm opinion it is the tree that should be given the
award, the owner is merely a caretaker.
